Discover the Spiritual Grandeur of Mahakaleshwar During Sawan

The holy city of Ujjain, one of the seven Moksha Puris, transforms into a vibrant and divine hub during the sacred month of Sawan (Shravan). Devotees from all corners of India gather here to witness two majestic spiritual experiences:

  • The Sawan Shahi Sawari (Royal Procession of Mahakaleshwar)

  • The sacred 84 Mahadev Yatra

Both journeys deepen the bond between the devotees and Lord Shiva, especially during this auspicious month.

What is Sawan Shahi Sawari?

The Shahi Sawari is a grand royal procession of Lord Mahakaleshwar, taken out on every Monday of Sawan (Sawan Somwaar). It is believed that Lord Shiva himself comes out to bless his devotees riding a silver palanquin, escorted by elephants, horses, and traditional musicians.

2025 Shahi Sawari Dates (Tentative):

  • First Somwaar: July 14, 2025

  • Second Somwaar: July 21, 2025

  • Third Somwaar: July 28, 2025

  • Fourth Somwaar: August 4, 2025

The final Bhasma Aarti on the last Monday is followed by a special mega procession that moves through major streets of Ujjain.

What is the 84 Mahadev Yatra?

The 84 Mahadev Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage that includes visiting 84 ancient Shiva temples around Ujjain, believed to have been established by Lord Shiva himself.

Yatra Highlights:

  • Most temples are situated around the Kshipra River and outskirts of Ujjain.

  • Some notable shrines: Chintaman Ganesh, Kal Bhairav, Siddhavat, Mangalnath, Vikrant Bhairav, Bilkeshwar Mahadev, and more.

  • Pilgrims complete this yatra in 3–7 days.

Completing this Yatra during Sawan is believed to bring Moksha (liberation) and divine blessings for generations.

How to Prepare for the Yatra & Sawari:

  • Bhasma Aarti Pass: Book in advance through the official Mahakaleshwar Temple website.

  • Wear traditional clothes (white dhoti, no leather items) for darshan and processions.

  • Best stay: Book your stay near Mahakaleshwar Temple. [Try: Ashutosh Homestay – Comfortable rooms with local meals & walkable distance to Mahakal]
